THE SUN CHRONICLE ENDORSES BILL BOWLES FOR STATE REPRESENTATIVE
With an election looming just days behind Halloween, we're haunted this year not so much by ghosts and goblins but by conditions summed up in the political cliche: "It's the economy, stupid." Times
are tough indeed. There's no question that the overriding issue at the Statehouse in the coming term will be how to cope with declining revenue. Massachusetts' needs are no less; the ability to meet them is severely restricted.
With that in mind, we see little choice in the race to succeed John Lepper, R-Attleboro, but to endorse the candidate who has shown the greater savvy in dealing with fiscal matters. That candidate is Bill Bowles, finance committee chairman of the Attleboro City Council. Click here for the full endorsement!
Massachusetts teachers back Bowles
“Bill Bowles is educators' choice in the Second Bristol House District," said Anne Wass, president of the Massachusetts Teachers Association. "He understands that children get one chance at a great education and that we need to do everything we can to provide them with the skills and knowledge they NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts Endorses Bill Bowles for State Representative Boston, MA – Today, NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts -- the leading statewide advocate for privacy and a woman’s right to choose -- announced its endorsement of Bill Bowles for State Representative in the 2nd Bristol District.“NARAL Pro-Choice M
need to succeed. Having served as a city councilor, he has a solid understanding of the issues facing public education. We are confident that Bill Bowles will be a strong voice for Massachusetts students and an advocate for our public schools, public colleges and UMass.”
Bowles said he is very pleased with the MTA endorsement, and looks forward to working with them as a State Representative. He said education is one of his top priorities, and is pleased the teachers have decided to back him. As an Electronic Engineer, I have seen “first hand” the value of education, and I believe that Massachusetts is highly dependent on a well educated workforce to thrive, especially during these very difficult times.
assachusetts is very proud to endorse Bill Bowles,” said Andrea Miller, the organization’s Executive Director. “He is committed to becoming a pro-choice leader at the State House, and we applaud his clear commitment to protecting privacy and promoting reproductive health.” “I am honored to have the backing of NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts,” said Bowles, “As State Representative, I plan to make sure that the government stays out of the personal lives of its citizens, and I pledge to be a strong advocate for women's health, safety, and reproductive freedom.” (click here for more)

Bristol County District Attorney Sam Sutter
I was pround to come to Attleboro and endorse the candidacy of Bill Bowles for State Representative. Bill Bowles is the clear choice in this district. Bill has proven himsel
f time and again on a host of issues ranging from finances to public safety. He is intelligent, dedicated to his constituents, and is a man of high personal integrity. Bill and I also share the same basic philosophy of the role of government, and agree on the approach to create a safer environment for our citizens. I look foward to working with Bill Bowles on Beacon Hill on laws for tougher sentences for assault with a gun, and longer periods of time a dangerous person can be held in jail. On September 16th, please cast your vote for Bill Bowles. (See Article in The Sun Chronicle)
Attleboro City Treasurer, Ethel Sandbach
I have worked with
Dr. Robert Schoch, Former Attleboro Land Trust President and City Council VP backs Bowles State Rep bid.
The 2008 State Representative contest is very important to Attleboro, and I believe Bill Bowles is the best candidate for the position. As a former President of the Attleboro Land Trust, and a coauthor of a college environmental science textbook, I strongly believe that it is very important to protect the environment, and especially the wetlands. I can vividly remember how Bill Bowles took a major leadership role on the City Council to oppose building ball fields in Locust Valley. He stood with the environmental community to protect this woodland treasure. Bill's Primary opponent supported building ball fields at the site. Fortunately a site on Oak Hill Avenue was found, that was more cost effective and environmentally sound. During Bill's tenure, he has been a friend of the environmentBill Bowles and I also served together as members of the Board of Directors of the Attleboro Historic Preservation Society, and Bill continues to serve on the Board as the Treasurer. As City Property Chair, Bill led the re-use of the historic Academy Building on Sanford to its current use. The city is currently using a state grant to help in the restoration of this historic treasure. I strongly urge a vote for Bill Bowles in the Primary Election on September 16th.
Former State Rep, Max Volterra
(The Sun Chronicle) To the editor: The voters of the 2nd Bristol District have a choice to elect a new state representative. The two major political parties have different agendas, and the candida
tes in this race reflect those differences.George Ross, the Republican nominee, talks about limiting taxation, I am told that he opposes a woman's right to choose, and it is difficult to remember any positive impact he has had on city affairs for his eight years on the city council. One project he opposed from the outset is Attleboro's effort to reconstruct and re-design one of the major entry points for the city, County Square. County Square had been a failed intersection for many years, and threatened to de-rail many other projects. The mayor and the redevelopment director, with the help of traffic engineers, prepared a plan to solve this major bottleneck. It was presented to the City Council, and George Ross, in behalf of a few disgruntled neighbors, opposed the plan. He chose to side with the opponents even though the project was clearly in the best interest of the city. The project was completed over his objections and has been a tremendous success, with the intersection now being very efficient. It is this kind of failure of leadership that is disturbing. In addition, unlike Rep. John Lepper's tenure when he worked with Republican governors and administrations to the city's advantage, George Ross as a Republican would be trying to work the levers of a Democratic administration and our city would be at a serious disadvantage. On the other hand, Bill Bowles has a distinguished record as an at-large city councilor, shepherding numerous important matters through the council. He supports a woman's right to choose, he has and will support the city's efforts to expand our industrial and business tax base, and most important, he has already met with the leaders of the state Legislature to ensure that Attleboro receives the funds and assistance we deserve. Bill Bowles is principled, and when necessary he is not afraid to buck the tide and fight for what he believes is best for our city. He will work effectively with Gov. Patrick and his administration. I ask the people of Attleboro to vote for Bill Bowles as our next state representative.
Max Volterra, Attleboro
Young Democrat Association of Attleboro
As The Young Democrats Association of Attleboro considered the Democratic choices for State Representative, Attleboro Democratic candidate Councilor Bill Bowles stood out most. His support of issues facing the future of Attleboro, and its younger constituents is exactly why we are endorsing Bill Bowles. We can clearly see that Bowles has a plan for Attleboro and the issues that youth specifically care about. Among Attleboro's youth, one issue of great importance is Education, and the reconstruction of Attleboro High School as well as funding of youth programs. On
both of these issues Bowles has a plan. To Bowles education is of high importance and he exemplifies this by saying he will support increased funding in education at all levels to keep Massachusetts competitive and will work to obtain funding for the reconstruction of Attleboro High School. Bowles has served Attleboro on the City Council for the past 13 years; most recently serving his 3rd term as the Chairman of the Finance Committee. When the state said no to funding Attleboro's Dare program, Bowles knew that this program is critical to young people, successfully fought to provide $5K of local funding for the program. This compelling support towards Attleboro's Youth shows Bill's compassion and commitment to the future of our community and our youth. We are endorsing the most experienced, qualified, dedicated, and professionally sound person for State Representative: Bill Bowles. On September 16, please stand with us, our parents, friends and neighbors in voting for Councilor Bill Bowles for State Representative.

Former City Council President, Carolyn Tedino
I had the honor of serving with Bill Bowles on the Attleboro City Counci
l for over 10 years, and have always been extremely impressed with the way Bill fights for the needs of every resident of the City of Attleboro. As his record demonstrates, Bill has never been afraid to take on tough issues and make difficult decisions. I know that Bill will be an effective and accountable State Representative, following the tradition of former State Reps Max Volterra, Steve Karol and John Lepper!
The Honorable Mayor Judy Robbins
As a former Mayor of Attleboro, I know how important it is to have really good people representing
our interests at the statehouse. I have known and worked with Bill Bowles for many years. Sometimes we disagree, but Bill's positions are always based on good reasoning and he is open to new information. Bill has the education and experience to continue our tradition of good representation. This year's need to choose a new state representative calls for a most careful choice and my choice in this election is clear - At-Large City Councilor Bill Bowles.
Former State Representative Stephen Karol
"As
great deal of hard work to effectively serve the public. I believe that
Member of the School Committee At-Large, Frank D'Agostino
"Bill Bowles truly represents the people of Attleboro and for the past 13 years as your City Councilman, he has always put the people of Attleboro first. He has been a fiscal watchdog for the tax-payers of Attleboro and he has a track record that works and the knowledge to get the job done. I ask all parents with children in the Attleboro Public Schools to look at all the candidates. You'll see that there is only one SMART choice for State Representative: Bill Bowles is the people's candidate and Attleboro needs strong representation on Beacon Hill."
Former President of The Attleboro Education Association, Jeanne Dyer
"I have known Bill Bowles for five years and he has always been a fighter for the people of Attleboro on the City Council, making sure that the school system gets what the
children of this community need. School budget hearings are usually sparsely attended, but I remember Bill’s presence at several over the years. I particularly remember his fight for our schools in December 2003 when errors and bad forecasting at City Hall resulted in a devastating loss of positions that touched every aspect of school life as we know it. He was on the side of maintaining school programs, like foreign language in the middle schools, and since then he has fought to restore the programs lost. As a current teacher in the Attleboro Public Schools and the former President of the Attleboro Education Association, I know the kind of person that should be fighting for us on Beacon Hill: that person is Bill Bowles. Bill has the education, experience, and qualifications to go to Boston and fight for increased local aid, and for provisioning our schools for the benefit of this community. Please stand with me and support Bill Bowles with your vote on September 16 and November 4."
(Note: The Attleboro Education Association does not have a policy of endorsing candidates. This testimonial is based on my personal experience with this candidate, who very much cares about our schools.) - Jeanne Dyer
I have known Bill for a number of years and have always been impressed by
his knowledge of Attleboro, its citizens, and their issues. He is a man of integrity and tells it like it is. You might say he not only talks the walk, but walks it, and straight down the center of Attleboro with pride. He loves his city and is a true public servant, giving up his free time for his "family." He has proven Attleboro's citizens are his priority time and time again as a City Councillor. As your State Representative, Bill will be easily accessible, willing to listen, and work hard. He is fiscally responsible and will take your concerns to the State House, fighting for them every step of the way. Please vote for Bill, my good friend, in the primary on Sept. 16 and once again on election day, Nov. 4, for your next State Representative. He will make a difference
City Counil At-Large Candidate - Joseph Lazzerini
I first met Councilor Bill Bowles personally when he came to my speak at my high school on how city ordinances become law, it was not the first time I heard of Bill. I read about him in the Attleboro newspaper daily and I have watched him on the local council meetings for the last few years. I watched Bill Bowles fight to make sure that
all new fire fighters are required to be certified paramedics, and that ordinance became law. This is just one of the many ways Bill has fought for the City of Attleboro. Each item he has pushed for strengthens Attleboro. When I heard Bill was running for State Representative I called him and I said how can I help send you to Beacon Hill. As a candidate for office, I see whats at-stake and I see the type of person who needs to serve in the capacity as State Representative. I signed on as Youth Coordinator. I dare you to have one conversation with Bill Bowles, and not be impressed. He will shock you with the amount intelligence, integrity, and commitment he has to public service here in Attleboro. If you want a rubber-stamp politician, or someone who will keep the voice of the constituents out of the State House, then you know who to vote for. If, however, you want a Democrat candidate that will fight for Attleboro, fight for you every single day, then cast your vote for City Councilor Bill Bowles for State Representative on September 16.
Mike Coyne- Northeastern University student and member of the Attleboro Ward 3 City and State Democratic Committee, also a member of the NU's College Democrats.
As a Young Democrat, I have had the privilege of serving on the Attleboro Democratic City Committee with City Councilor Bill Bowles, and besides his credentials and accomplisments, I would like to point out how down-to-earth Bill is. He's extremely approachable, and makes it a point to take into consideration anyones ideas and thoughts on political ideology, campaign tactics, and policy in general. Bill would not serve as a partisan politician on Beacon Hill, but a true representative of Attleboro. As a young constituent in Attleboro I have dealt with Bowles on all levels and I happily endorse him for State Representative.
